WHAT IS CBT?
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a skill-based therapy designed to (1) improve negative feelings (emotions) and (2) build helpful coping strategies (behaviors) by changing negative thought patterns (cognitions). CBT is widely accepted as the most effective treatment for emotional and behavioral difficulties in children and adults.

CBT Occurs in Three Phases:

Phase 1. Skill building - is about understanding CBT framework and learning effective strategies to reach your treatment goals. (Approximately sessions 1-6)

Phase 2. Practice - is about learning to combine strategies while completing tasks both in session and outside of session. This phase allows for mastery of new strategies to overcome difficult feelings, thoughts, and unhelpful behavior patterns. Another label for this phase is exposure. (Approximately sessions 7-20)

Phase 3. Maintenance - focuses on application of the strategies to new situations. This phase allows for a flexible meeting schedule until strategies are more integrated to daily life independently. (Length varies based on individual)

CBT Frequency
Weekly sessions are recommended. Research shows that CBT is effective when a weekly model is used. This is because each session builds upon the previous one. Therefore, adherence to a weekly model maximizes the likelihood of positive results.
